Once upon a time, my Australian base at Aberfoyle Park was stuck near the dilapidated monstrosity that is The Hub. Well, it still is but now there is more on offer nearby rather than the standard depressing trappings of any other out-of-town shopping mall (though I do recommend Hub Gourmet Butchers). Within a pleasant walking distance a nearby strip mall offers the painfully obvious Domino’s, Subway and a funeral home but breaking up the morbid and monotonous is an unbelievable breath of fresh air in enjoyable, casual dining.

I had been aching to take Big E to Fudd’s Restaurant since it opened 3 years ago. Finally we were on a short work break together in South Australia with enough time to kick back and tolerate an Aussie summer.

Fudd’s major draw card for us is the variety of Australian craft beers on offer. What a great way to be able to sample so many locally brewed specimens in the one place. Big E started with the Fox Hat Lager before coming to my way of thinking with the Swell Lager, something a little more refreshing in the heat. Of course we will return for more and will also keep an eye on the ever revolving specials board for other amber surprises.

The burger menu is an added bonus. Your choice served on its own however a side of fries is a cheap add on if you need them. Alternatively share a bowl of the varieties available like, sweet potato, texas, dirty or chilli fries – and I’m talking real chilli con carne here folks, not dainty chilli flake sprinkles.

Taking advantage of the undercover, outdoor seating before the sun blasts unrepentant, Big E chose the Hot & Spicy burger whilst I greedily devoured The Big Swiss. All burgers are cooked to medium unless otherwise requested. We didn’t. Why mess with what the chef designed? They were perfect as they were.

We shared a generous bowl of sweet potato fries that came with our choice of two dipping sauces, but maybe we should have bypassed this complex carb to make room for dessert. I hear the chocolate brownie is next level.

Fudd’s is fantastic. The locals love it and patrons travel far and wide to indulge, so if you love your beer and supporting local … have at it. You won’t be disappointed.
